Photo of Plancius

Built in 1976 for as an oceanic research vessel for the Royal Dutch Navy, the MV Plancius was converted into a Polar expedition ship in 2009.

The Plancius has an ice-strengthened hull and accommodates 108 passengers with with 50 cabins, all with en suite toilets and showers. The Plancius boasts a dining hall/lecture room, large lounge (with bar) and good sized deck space. The vessel is also equipped with 10 zodiacs so you never have to wait to go ashore!

Accommodation and ship facilities are simple, but comfortable and modern. The Plancius is not a luxury ship and tends to focus on the educational and photography elements more.

You’ll make plenty of shore landings aboard the Plancius ship in which you’ll have ample opportunity to explore, learn and take photos!

Public Area Facilities

The Plancius is both comfortable and basic. The large dining room has enough space to seat everyone on board and the area is lined with large windows on both the port and starboard sides so you never miss a view! The food is excellent aboard the Plancius and lunch and breakfast is generally a buffet style affair.

The observation lounge is one of the best places on the ship. The large panoramic windows enclose the lounge on the starboard and port sides and there is also a well stocked bar adjoining the lounge. There is also a 24 hour beverage service on board.

There is also a lovely library on board packed with books and information surrounding the Antarctic region. You’ll find books on wildlife, photography, history, geography and much more! If fiction is your thing, the library is also well stocked with novels.

Cabin Facilities

All cabins aboard the Plancius are well equipped and comfortable.

All rooms come with private en suite facilities, storage area, desk and chair, flatscreen TV/DVD player and bedding. All cabins have an outward facing porthole or window.

Premium rooms come with more space, better linen and a small amenity kit including shampoo, condition, toothpaste etc.
