Ortelius: Ship Details and Overview

Photo of Ortelius

Built in Poland in 1989 for the Russian Academy of Science, the Ortelius was originally named “Marina Svetaeva” and is one of the most popular vessels in Antarctica.

The Ortelius has the highest ice-class notation – UL1 equivalent to 1A and sails both the Arctic and Antarctic oceans. With a superbly strong hull, the Ortelius is able to tackle both multi-year pack ice and solid sea ice as it navigates its way through some of the most epic landscapes on earth.

Carrying only a 108 passengers, the Ortelius is a fabulous vessel for wildlife watching as it is able to make it’s way into most ports and small bays with ease. The ship is managed by 34 highly experienced Russian nautical crew members and the captain operates an open-bridge system for best possible viewing.

The deck space is large on the Ortelius and the interior has a comfortable feel to it with several restaurants, a bar, lounge and sauna. In 2016, deck 4 was completely refurbished, as was deck 5 in 2014. The Ortelius offers a wide array of activities including kayaking, camping and helicopter rides. Boots are available to hire also.
