About the Akademic Sergey Vavilov
Built in Scandinavia for the Russian Academy of Science, the Akademik Sergey Vavilov is one of the most impressive research vessels in Antarctica.
Like its sister ship the Akademik Ioffe, the Vavilov has an ice strengthened hull and comes complete with external stabilizers for added smoothness and security. With only 92 passengers, the ship is fairly small and can easily negotiate some of the shallower landing spots.
Although far from a luxury vessel, the Vavilov offers excellent facilities for a research cruise ship. On board you’ll find a gym, sauna, plunge pool and wellness program which includes yoga sessions and a massage therapist!
There is plenty of deck space around the ship and the captain operates an open bridge set up so you get the best views possible. The interior is light and spacious – perfect for adventure cruising. The ship is designed to go places many ships can’t and, as such, the Akademik Sergey Vavilov has developed a reputation for excellent wildlife watching. You are guaranteed many shore landings and activities when travelling on board.
