*The Akademik Ioffe has now been de-commissioned
As of May 2019, the Russian Government suddenly and unexpectedly commandeered the Ioffe. The vessel was on long-term charter from Russian Academy of Sciences to One Ocean Expeditions before the sudden de-commision.
Built for Polar research, the Akademik Ioffe is widely regarded as one of the toughest and safest vessels in the Antarctic region. The ship offers a whole host of facilities often not found on research vessels including a sauna, hot tub and gym!
Complete with ice-strengthened hull and stabilizers, the ship is ideal for people who struggle a little with sea sickness.
There is excellent deck space around the ship and the captain has an open bridge policy which is always nice. The Akademik Ioffe is designed to be very maneuverable and can access many landing sites that larger shops cannot. Because of this, the vessel has a reputation for adventure and excellent wildlife watching. You are guaranteed many shore landings and activities when travelling aboard the Akademik Ioffe.
With excellent on board chefs, a small fleet of zodiacs and quiet, comfortable cabins, the Akademik Ioffe is favorite among passengers looking for an excellent research vessel to cruise on.
